Getting Started
If you would like to give Aikido a try, you have a few options:
JOIN ANY TIME
You can jump right in and start training at any time in any of our classes. In our dojo, all members practice together regardless of rank. At first, you will be paired with higher ranked students until you are comfortable with the basics. We make a strong effort to welcome new members at a pace which they find safe and comfortable. Many students choose this option, as it allows them to begin their practice in a dynamic, compelling environment.
START IN A “BASICS” CLASS
One day a week, we offer a “Basics” class which has a little slower pace with more explanation. Although not focused just on beginners, it can be a less demanding environment for newer people. This class is open to all dojo members.
START IN A “BEGINNER’S” CLASS
A few times a year, we offer a series of classes aimed at brand new students. They follow a logical progression, side-by-side with other new students, and with the assistance of senior students. There is a set fee for these classes. It is NOT necessary to join the dojo in order to attend a beginner’s series. Also, it is NOT necessary to attend a Beginner’s Series before joining the dojo. You can always just jump right in! Click here for more information on Beginner’s classes.
joining the dojo
If you choose to become a member, we welcome you to practice for your first month free of charge. (Beginner’s series participation does not count towards your free month). If you decide to stay after that period, you will be asked to begin paying monthly dues (see here). As an educational nonprofit, we have a generous and straightforward scholarship program… our goal is to include everyone regardless of their financial situation. Click here for scholarship information.
Before you arrive
Please sign an “assumption of risk” waiver before joining us on the mat. You can sign this online by clicking here.
You should plan on arriving 10-15 minutes early to familiarize yourself with the dojo, as well as ask any questions you might have. Wear comfortable excercise clothing. Please, no jewelry, perfume, cologne, or shorts on the mat. A gi (uniform) can be purchased at the dojo when you are ready.
We look forward to meeting you!
